Why does Ziruma use teak wood?

Teak wood is a naturally sturdy material that has built-in defenses against bacteria and fungi. It also has a high resistance to water decay making it perfect for kitchenware. Unlike other woods used for kitchenware, teak has unique elements called tectoquinones. They give the wood superior antibacterial and antifungal defenses.

At Ziruma, we only use 25-year teak wood. Why? Only Mature Teak has a high silica and rubber content, which are natural water repellents that prevent decay. 100% Heartwood is used for all our creations.

How much does shipping cost?

All orders to the US Continental States qualify for free shipping. You will be given a paid option to select other express services during checkout if rush delivery is required.

Will my cutting board look identical to your photos?

Every single piece is unique in look because of the wood grain characteristics. There are no two identical boards

Where can I store my wooden products?

You can store your products in a drawer or on the countertop. Just make sure the board is completely dry before you put it away.

Are Ziruma products sustainable?

Our products have the lowest carbon footprint in kitchenware. Our process uses up to 67% less energy than materials used in typical kitchenware. Products are carefully wrapped in tracing paper and shipped in a thoughtfully designed box made of cardboard and sugar cane fiber. All our packaging is biodegradable and plastic-free

How should I wax my wooden product?

With frequent use, the board may lose its coating and protection. Waxing your products will revitalize the wood and bring back the soft and lustrous shine. You can either use coconut oil or natural beeswax to oil/wax your wooden products. We strongly recommend you not to use mineral or vegetable oil as its acids decay wood.

We choose natural beeswax as it is the best companion of teak wood for kitchen products. Over 300 compounds give beeswax antiseptic and antifungal properties. It is a natural barrier against pathogens. We recommend waxing your products once a month or whenever they have lost their lustrous shine.

How do I clean my wooden products?

You can clean your product with water and soft soap. Detergents may damage the surface of wooden products. We also recommend using vinegar for deep cleaning from time to time, as it is more friendly with wood. Use a clean cloth to dry it.

NOTE: Do not use your dishwasher. This would ruin the product and cause it to crack and warp.

Do your boards come pre-treated?

Yes, all of our products come cured in a natural moisturizing mix of beeswax, linseed, and lemon oil. You won't need to oil it upon arrival, just a light wash with soap before using works perfectly. The coating keeps the surface smooth and prevents bacteria from hosting and transferring to your food.

Can I cut/put raw meat on this board?

Yes. It is made exactly for that purpose. With time, you may notice some scratches on the board, that is ok, it is what keeps your knives sharp and the reason chefs use wood on cutting boards. Teak Wood has self-preserving properties that kill any bacteria. It could be a good idea to apply vinegar from time to time to clean the board, do not use vegetable oil, as it may add some acidity to the board. Whenever you have the time, you can sand it lightly and apply beeswax to keep the board as new for years!
